Health and Spirituality

A group of bloggers are doing a series called Embracing Self-Care and each is posting on the same topic every Wednesday this month and they’re extending an open invitation to join in. Here are my thoughts on this week’s topic, Health and Spirituality.

Some people can’t wait to read their Bible as soon as they wake up in the morning. They pray and talk with God all day. Their day goes badly if they haven’t spent enough time doing either of these.

That’s not me.

Growing spiritually is vitally important to me, it’s just not the most natural thing. I used to feel guilty that I could go long periods of time without reading my Bible and not pray a whole lot and still do pretty okay. I’ve always been more than a ‘Sunday Christian’ and my love for God has never decreased, by his grace it’s always grown, but  I haven’t always felt I need continual contact with him for this to happen. I could get what I needed at a relatively safe distance.

But God is not safe.

For the past year I’ve consistently been in God’s word and though prayer has always been a struggle for me, I’m getting better (having kids to pray for has helped). I’m beginning to understand why some people cannot go through their day without God. Making him a part of my whole day, not just a few minutes in the morning, and spending more time studying his word and discussing it with other believers is shifting the tectonic plates of my soul.  The catalysis’ aren’t anything glamorous, simple Bible reading, prayer and fellowship, but they are effective.

So I’ve come to view my spiritual growth the same way I do brushing my teeth: it’s a normal part of my day that is vitally important because if I don’t do it, it can send me on a path to bigger problems that could have been avoided by a little preventative care. Just like I go to the dentist for a thorough cleaning, at times God works hard on the deep recesses of my soul or gives me a greater understanding of who he is. But most days I brush my teeth and read my Bible and pray.

We don’t live on the mountaintops. We live in the valleys of dirty laundry, cranky kids and juggling responsibilities. God’s can transform our lives through the mundane and the daily, it just takes discipline and devotion from us.

  3. Oh man. This is a tough question. I have a really hard time with any sort of structured devotional or prayer in my life, as it seems to lose meaning for me when I schedule myself into doing it.

    However, while I was in Zimbabwe I had plenty of time to write (and plenty of life to process), so I was journaling almost every day. And in the midst of all that, I read a book that mentioned reading through a psalm (or more) a day, which seemed both achievable and, to be honest, easy. I’ll admit that I ‘fell off the wagon’ when we were traveling South Africa, but I’m encouraged to pick that up again. Because becoming more familiar with some basic truths of faith, AND being reminded that humans throughout history have had doubt, is really helpful, even if it feels a bit small.

    And if I’m caring for myself spiritually, I always feel better not worse. If that isn’t a good motivator for committing to spiritual health, I’m not sure what is!
